2015   ´uns plural for one

´uns is a newly founded art book publication that emphasises on publication and distribution of artist made books, multiples and educational material. The publications owner is Guðrún Benónýsdóttir.  ´uns´s primary role is to lay a foundation for artists to produce artwork within the frame of the publication, and the printed form.

´uns plural for one is a forum for multiplying as well as for the singular.

Artist statement

I´m a visual artist based in Reykjavik/Berlin. I received B.A. diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo (2000) and have since been working with different art forms and installations.  I graduated from the Icelandic Academy of the Arts 2014 with M.Art.Ed degree in art-teaching and have been teaching artbook and bookmaking courses in different art schools and cultural institutions in Reykjavik. I´m a founder and owner of the artbook/multiple publication ´uns plural for one where my aim consists of publishing artistic books and multiples and curating shows with relation to publication matters. I´m also a co-founder and owner of Útúrdúr, an artist publishing company and book store in Reykjavik. I have been engaged in several culturally related jobs in art, film and theatre and was one of the founders of Gallery Kling&Bang.

In my art I reflect on the issues of contemporary art with reversion to the past; the poetical, experience,  enchantment, imagery and aesthetics. My work could be described as nonphysical sets for reveries and involuntary mnemonic activities, or as scenarios with a notion of an act or a moment unfolding.

Installation in Birting  Group show, Gerðarsafn Iceland.  Illumination/ Birting is part of Reykjavik artfestival 2015

Illumination is an exhibition of works by contemporary Icelandic artists inspired by stained-glass windows by Gerður Helgadóttir (1928-1975) in Skálholt Cathedral, Kópavogur Church, and elsewhere. The exhibition aims to consider places such as museums and churches, and the rituals that take place there: whether formal, casual or solemn, they clearly influence the perception and experience of the observer/participant. Gerður‘s window designs for Kópavogur Church are characterised by rhythmic forms and a colour palette which create a “shrine“ of flowing shapes without any overt religious symbolism – the aim is more to touch the observer at a universal, emotional level. “Ecclesiastical” or “religious” themes will, by the same token, give way to broader approaches, bringing out the universal human, spiritual, phenomenological or mystical character of the works of contemporary artists.

Participating artists, in addition to Gerður Helgadóttir (1928-1974): Guðrún Kristjánsdóttir (b. 1950), Erla Þórarinsdóttir (b. 1955), Guðrún Benónýsdóttir (b. 1969), Hekla Dögg Jónsdóttir (b. 1969), Dodda Maggý (b. 1981), Lilja Birgisdóttir (b. 1983), Katrin Agnes Klar (b. 1985) and Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir (b. 1985). Curator Kristín Dagmar Jóhannesdóttir

2015   Stúdíó Gerðar / Gerdur´s Studio

A hands-on educational exhibition

Gerður's Studio is a hands-on educational exhibition where visitors can peek behind the scenes to learn about Gerður Helgadóttir and her art through the medium of her studio. An experimental studio has been created, based on the artist's own studio. A range of creative projects offer museum visitors – both young and old – the opportunity to play an active role in the development of the exhibition.

The concept of the exhibition has been developed by Guðrún Benónýsdóttir in collaboration with the Kópavogur Art Museum and she led open workshops for different age groups through the exhibition period.
